St. Kitts & Nevis Banking & Taxes

CURRENCY

The local currency is the East Caribbean Dollar, which is broken down into 100 cents. Coins come in 1, 2, 5, 10, 25 and $1 pieces, while notes are issued in 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 dollar denominations.

TAX

TIPPING

If there is no service charge on the bill, 15% is the standard. Taxi drivers have come to expect 10%. Hotel staff like porters and bellmen generally recieve $1 per bag. All-inclusive resorts don't expect to be tipped.

TRAVELLER'S CHEQUES

Traveler's cheques are accepted throughout the country.

CREDIT CARDS

Most major credit cards are accepted at many large hotels, restaurants, and shops. Many can be used to obtain cash advances at banks and ATMs.

BANKING HOURS AND AUTOMATED TELLERS

Banks hours are Monday through Thursday from 8:00am to 2:00pm and Friday 8:00am to 4:00pm. The Bank of Nevis is open Saturday from 8:30am to 11:00am. There are few ATMs on the islands, at The Royal Bank of St. Kitts, at the Nevis airport, the Bank of Nova Scotia, FirstCaribbean International Bank, and the St. Kitts-Nevis National Bank. All ATMs operate on the Sirrus and Plus systems.
